Circumference and Arc Length

Lesson

The distance around a circle is the circumference. An arc length is a piece of it — proportional to the central angle.

Formulas

C=2πr=πdC = 2\pi r = \pi d
arc length=θ3602πr\text{arc length} = \frac{\theta}{360^\circ} \cdot 2\pi r

Where θ\theta is the central angle in degrees.

Worked example

Arc of 90° in a circle with r=4r = 4, using π3.14\pi \approx 3.14:

arc=1423.144=6.28\text{arc} = \tfrac{1}{4} \cdot 2 \cdot 3.14 \cdot 4 = 6.28

Use π3.14\pi \approx 3.14 for all problems in this topic.
