Ratios and Proportions

A ratio compares two quantities. We can write it as $3 : 4$ or as the fraction $\frac{3}{4}$ .

A proportion says that two ratios are equal:

\frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d}

To solve a proportion for a missing value, use cross-multiplication: multiply diagonally and set the products equal. So $\frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d}$ means $a \cdot d = b \cdot c$ .

Worked example 1

Solve $\frac{x}{6} = \frac{2}{3}$ .

Cross-multiply:

x \cdot 3 = 6 \cdot 2

3x = 12

x = 4

Worked example 2 — real-world setup

A recipe needs 2 cups of flour for every 3 cookies. How many cups for 12 cookies?

Set up the proportion (flour over cookies, on each side):

\frac{2}{3} = \frac{x}{12}

Cross-multiply:

2 \cdot 12 = 3x

x = 8 \text{ cups}
