Ratios and Proportions

A ratio compares two quantities. We can write it as 3:43 : 4 or as the fraction 34\frac{3}{4}.

A proportion says that two ratios are equal:

ab=cd\frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d}

To solve a proportion for a missing value, use cross-multiplication: multiply diagonally and set the products equal. So ab=cd\frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d} means ad=bca \cdot d = b \cdot c.

Worked example 1

Solve x6=23\frac{x}{6} = \frac{2}{3}.

Cross-multiply:

x3=62x \cdot 3 = 6 \cdot 2
3x=123x = 12
x=4x = 4

Worked example 2 — real-world setup

A recipe needs 2 cups of flour for every 3 cookies. How many cups for 12 cookies?

Set up the proportion (flour over cookies, on each side):

23=x12\frac{2}{3} = \frac{x}{12}

Cross-multiply:

212=3x2 \cdot 12 = 3x
x=8 cupsx = 8 \text{ cups}
